The people. It’s what @dosomethingfornothing is all about. Last month, we took @lightnoiseart exhibition to four new cities - Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. Love and gratitude for every person in the @toms family for helping us amplify the stories of people currently sleeping on the streets across Europe. Respect to every artist who joined us and to every person who attended the shows. It wouldn’t have happened without you 🙌🏽 #dosomethingfornothing

This is David. We saw each other again last week. It’s the third time I’ve cut his hair. I guess it’s fair to say that I’m his hairdresser and he’s one of my regulars. But, as you know, this has always been about much more than that... When our paths first crossed over a year ago at his spot near London Bridge station, we had an immediate connection. Despite sleeping out on the street for the last two years, (I say that so often I have to remind myself what just a few nights on the concrete would feel like...) David seems to have a way of retaining who he is. His smile is infectious. He considers it the most valuable thing he has. . “When I wake up, at about 5:45 in the morning, I sit by the station. I always make sure I say good morning and smile at people as they’re on their way to work. Because, we can be so sad sometimes...I really see it. We’re all walking around with troubles and I think a smile can make you forget them for a moment... Like, this lady smiled at me this morning and it instantly put a smile on my face also. Then there was this one fella, we see each other every morning, who stopped the other day and said - ‘You know what David? You make it a pleasure going to work, I genuinely look forward to walking past here in the morning.’ - At first I thought it wouldn’t make a difference, but then I see people’s reactions and it’s real... I have some people say to me - ‘David, you’re the only person who says good morning to me...’ which is mad isn’t it..? I know a smile makes a difference because I’ve seen it for myself now. I’ve seen people as they turn the corner, look around and then smile back... That’s really nice.” . David and I talk a lot on the phone and touch base whenever we can. The last five years have been a rollercoaster for him. If you want to find more about his story, scroll down in my feed a while. @gotvitaminc painted David last year for our @lightnoiseart show in London and we’re selling the painting, with all proceeds going directly to David. Scroll right and DM me if you’re interested. Thanks for your constant love and support. People like David are as important to me as anybody else. #DoSomethingForNothing

The biggest thing I’m learning is that we’re all way more similar than we think... As a liberal person, I used to hold on to thoughts like that because it seemed like a nice way to think about the world. But now it’s part of me through experience, which feels different. #DoSomethingForNothing

I just arrived in Manchester this evening for @lightnoiseart exhibition tomorrow evening and I’ve been thinking about the last time I was here. This is Chris. He was in a bad way when I first met him. A friend of his had passed away just a few weeks before... Sadly, his friend was one of 50 homeless people who died on streets in Greater Manchester last year. Chris was in the army for years. He spoke a bit about that. “Things have changed a lot since then... I suffered with PTSD for a while afterwards. I didn’t know what to do with myself when that period of time ended. Well, anyway...here I am. I cut Chris’s hair in an alleyway away from the noise of the city centre nearby. It was nice to share those moments together before he had to run on to an appointment. Before we left, I asked Chris his message: “Have a little bit of love..spread it as much as you can...do you know what I mean? We’re all in this together. We all came into this world the same way...we’ll all go out the same way. We all end up in the same sized fucking box.”. I’d love to see anyone in Manchester at our event tomorrow. Free entry. All welcome. 6pm - 9pm at @theyard_mcr (Link in bio) It’s important to find new ways of telling the story of people like Chris to create a change. I believe in art and expression to do so. #DoSomethingForNothing

I first met Brian in 2017 whilst in Edinburgh with @gorillaarthouseen - I was rushing to get the train back to London. Brian was sitting outside of Waverley railway station when he looked at me with a big smile and said hello. There was something about Brian that made me forget the time... When life brings these moments, I’ve learnt to lean into them and say thank you. We spent the next hour together and I gave him a haircut. Recently, I was lucky enough to run into Brian again and make some more friends on the streets of Edinburgh with my friend Hal Samples ( @malkovichpants ) We hung out, listened and shared stories. More of Brian in the new #DoSomethingForNothing episode on LUSH player now. Link in Bio 🖤

In Amsterdam recently, I met Eelco. In a short space of time, this man has become very important to me. His resilience and optimism is contagious. On a cold evening @gotvitaminc and I visited a shelter that opens its doors to those who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets of the city. As we walked into the building, something drew me to Eelco. We nodded heads at one another, so I went over and we started talking. Eelco is an incredibly talented human being. An artist. He’s had a difficult time recently but his spirit is strong. For the last few months, Eelco has found shelter in different areas of Amsterdam. But when they have the space, he usually sleeps in the building we visited that evening - “You’ll only see that I’m homeless if I want to show you... I don’t ask for anything, I always get by some way. This is just a period of time but it’s not my life. There’s good people here, people that will help you out. I’ll get back on my feet again soon, I have no doubts about that. It was getting late. I didn’t have my equipment with me, so I made an appointment to cut Eelco’s hair at 7.30am the next morning... We walked to a canal nearby and I set up and started cutting his hair as the sun came up. I’ve visited Eelco again in Amsterdam since this day. There’s so much more to tell you about this guy. But for now, I can say that we spoke earlier this week and Eelco’s found a room. We shared some smiles about that. He’s going to be part of our @lightnoiseart exhibit in Amsterdam later this month (swipe right for more info) It’s Monday, March 25. Come along if you’re in town. We’re using our creativity to provide an amplifier, because Eelco’s story is important...as is the story of every other person living on the fringes of society. #DoSomethingForNothing

Thinking back to the time I met Joey in NYC. He came out of nowhere and brought all of the good vibes. I can’t count how many people people stopped to talk and spend time with us that summer evening in Union Square. The further I travel, the more sure I am when you give people a place to access their compassion, they’ll grab the opportunity with both hands. I get asked all the time what my mission is: #DoSomethingForNothing provides accessibility. I never claim to have a complete solution, but I’m certain that everything we do begins with taking the first step.

I met Callum in Manchester recently. I’d just arrived in town with @gotvitaminc and we’d only been walking for a few minutes when we saw someone bundled up in their sleeping bag. I often talk about isolation. For a guy like Callum, it’s as real as it gets. . “I’ve been sleeping on the streets for a long time now...It’s hard to keep track. I always keep myself to myself. I find it difficult to trust anyone really...I’ve felt that way since I was I kid. I didn’t have any family as such. I was raised in care, so I was moved around a lot.” . Whilst I was cutting his hair, Callum pulled out a joint of spice (K2 in USA) I’ve ran into this countless times in the past. Once marketed as a Synthetic Marijuana, Spice is cheap, easily accessible, potent and highly addictive. A few years ago, it got a hold on some people I got close with, who slept on the streets in London. Two of those people aren't with us anymore. I asked Callum how it makes him feel. . “It just numbs you, you know..? I don’t know how else to describe it...It makes you feel numb to everything. It gets you to sleep. It knocks you out. It makes time fly and sometimes you need that out here.” . Through all Callum has been through, he had this smile that makes you want to smile with him. It only appeared from time to time, but when it did, I saw another side of him. A warmth that I wouldn’t have had the chance to see whilst walking past him on the street. #DoSomethingForNothing

One year ago, @gotvitaminc and I put on an art exhibition in Skid Row, Los Angeles. This area is home to around 2000 humans who are experiencing homelessness. Five star accommodation is a tent, with the shade of building or a tree (if you’re lucky) One star is sleeping with the trash and the rats on the concrete. Day after day, we’d visit people who live here. Sometimes I’d cut hair. Other times we just spent time listening. Together, with local artists, we created art to amplify the lives of some of the people we got to know. To give their stories some importance and bring some community together for an evening. It was well received. @lightnoiseart was born. All proceeds from that evening went to The Midnight Mission, a safe haven in the neighbourhood that helps as many people as they can get through their doors. Six months later, we put on two more exhibitions in London, north and south of the river. This time, our focus was on the people sleeping rough on the streets of London. We spent months meeting some amazing humans from all walks of life who became a part of this. This year @tomsuk and @dosomethingfornothing have teamed up to take @lightnoiseart to Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin.
