Stop and smell the roses, but don’t eat the persimmons. If you know what we mean… #holidayseason

Yesterday we posted an image of a #foamfree flower install (I wouldn’t call it a wall because the results were airier) using a 100% organic, compostable alternative to floral foam. Thanks to everyone who answered, discussed and reposted! Our main point is to keep the conversation going on how we can find new ways to reduce waste and promote sustainability in the floral industry. We will be posting pictures, tips and our methods on how to use WATERMELON 🍉 as an alternative to foam on the Tin Can Studios blog in January. While you wait I want to point out that we only used 2 or 3 (@flowerschool_la students can you remember?) small watermelons for this exciting experiment. We will be sending out “Handpicked” books to @larkfarnumdesign @horticulturalalliancehamptons @rosewoodfloralco @briankempen @natasjakinnen who were the first five followers to answer correctly (please direct message us your mailing addresses!) If you don’t have the book already, it is my first book with descriptions on how to make arrangements using chicken wire or tape grid (no floral foam). Many of the recipes use somewhat simpler ingredients than what you might see here on our feed and is perfect for those of you starting out with floral arranging. It also works as a great gift for the holidays and it is divided into four seasons (hint, hint) Anyways… thank you all for participating in this ongoing conversation!

This #foamfree install is the result of an idea we had been wanting to try out for quite a while as an alternative to floral foam for wedding installs, flower walls, arches, chuppahs, etc. It was pulled off by a lovely group of fast working students I had the pleasure of teaching during my “sustainable methods” class @flowerschool_la in Los Angeles! The material we used is a 100% organic, fully compostable material (a method mainly suitable for events). Can you spot what we are talking about? We are in the mood for sharing and will send a signed copy of my book “Handpicked” to the first five people who guess correctly. We will also be posting how this method works on the Tin Can Studios blog in January! What’s important here is that we as florists collectively make an effort to find new ways to reduce harmful waste in the events industry whenever possible… now back to work! #floralinstallation #laflowers #eventdesign #nofloralfoam

THIS CLASS IS SOLD OUT. Please email us to get on the waiting list. Attention all wreath lovers! Tin Can Studios will be hosting a wreath workshop on December 2nd in collaboration with @thenomadhotel New York. The method we will use combines fresh cut flowers with a mix of longer lasting foliage giving the wreath two life cycles. Once the fresh cut flowers wilt away, they may be pulled out creating a new look. The foliage will last longer and dries nicely making it the perfect wreath for a party and wonderful for the entire holiday season. Refreshments will be served and a wide range of materials are included so everyone can create their own personal style of wreath. NoMad New York is housed in a turn of the century Beaux-Arts building that has been fully restored to its original grandeur with interiors by French designer Jacques Garcia. The hotel is intended as a fresh take on the classic grand hotels of Europe with a distinct New York sensibility. A perfect backdrop for a fun and relaxing wreath-making day to kick off the season. See link in profile or go to “order” tab on our website and get yourself a spot while you still can! SOLD OUT. #wreathworkshop #nomadhotel
